30-year-old Rachael Marie Smith pleaded guilty yesterday to a rental scam that nabbed her $110,000 from hopeful renters.
The woman, Rachael Marie Smith, allegedly posted her Outer Richmond apartment on Craigslist, and solicited renters into leases before telling them they couldn’t move in right away because her mother was dying from cancer. Smith was able to collect $5,600 from 18 people for their first month’s rent and deposit, before two co-workers discovered they had been rented the same apartment, and neither had been able to contact Smith.
Smith pleaded guilty to three counts of grand theft and has been ordered to pay a full return to each of the victims.
