Of the 204 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (AKA "Obamacare") waivers President Barack Obama approved in April, nearly 20 percent are for "fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district." That is to say, many of the waivers were issued to companies in San Francisco. According to right-leaning D.C.-based site The Daily Caller, restaurants and "fancy" establishments like Boboquivari’s, Café des Amis, Café Mason, Franciscan Crab, Campton Place, Hotel Nikko, Tru Spa, among others, all received waivers.
Pelosi’s district secured almost 20 percent of the latest issuance of waivers nationwide, and the companies that won them didn’t have much in common with companies throughout the rest of the country that have received Obamacare waivers.Other common waiver recipients were labor union chapters, large corporations, financial firms and local governments. But Pelosi’s district’s waivers are the first major examples of luxurious, gourmet restaurants and hotels getting a year-long pass from Obamacare.
Another critical factor San Francisco companies don't have in common with other nationwide waiver recipients? Healthy SF, the city's own innovative program designed to make health care services accessible and affordable to uninsured San Francisco residents, operated by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Seems like Obamacare isn't needed in a city that has its very own wildly successful version of affordable healthcare. Could that be a reason why so many San Francisco companies received waivers? As of now, we're told that the Obama administration won't say what the requirements are and how they go about deciding who gets waivers. (Those of you more familiar with national healthcare laws versus local ones are urged to chime in via the comments.)
But that didn't stop several right-leaning politicos from using the puffed-up issue to feign disgust. Disgraced former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin sent this soundbite to Daily Caller, “Unflippingbelievable! No, wait, it is believable...Seriously, this is corrupt. And anyone who still supports the Pelosi-Reid-Obama agenda of centralized government takeovers of the free market and the corresponding crony capitalism is, in my book, complicit.” Adorable.
House Speaker John Boehner's office decried the waivers as another “backroom sweetheart deal” for affordable healthcare.
