Before James Cameron there was Richard Wagner as our leading triumphalist craftsman of overwrought epic entertainments. Since the blue face paint from your seventh trip to see has probably washed off by now, why not put on a few pounds - of costume, that is - and enter the San Francisco Opera's Wagner "Ring Cycle Costume Contest" on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Yes, break out those horns, shields and spears and have your moment on the catwalk right outside the War Memorial Opera House. Men, women, children and even pets are invited to dress up as their favorite characters from Wagner's four opera Ring Cycle. Prizes for the winners include tickets to this season's production of Die Walkure and all kinds of SF Opera schwag. SFist will SO be there, since we're reliably informed that contestants will not be required to sing.
