Avatar took in $73 million in it's first weekend at the U.S. box office, $232 million worldwide, making it the number one movie and the biggest debut for a non-sequel.
This total is expected to grow, as James Cameron's film has yet to open in Japan and China, two of the biggest international markets, according to the LA Times. And with good reviews coming into the Christmas weekend, Fox executive's expect Avatar could make as much in its second weekend as it did in it's first. Also, the took in $73 million in it's first weekend">Wall Street Journal reports that Titanic, Cameron's last film, only made $28 million in its opening weekend. And that film did OK.
