It remains a good time to be a live music junkie in the Bay Area this week, with local lo-fi punk rock trio Nodzzz at Hemlock Tuesday, Chicago's hipster hyped Kid Sister at Rickshaw stop Thursday and Montreal's indie heroes Islands (ex-Unicorns) at Bottom of the Hill Friday. And while it may not be SXSW or Noise Pop, the 8th annual Budget Rock Festival has quite a bit to offer, including an excellent Bottom of the Hill show Sunday with Gris Gris, Thee Oh Sees, The Fresh & Only's and more.
Our pick for the week, however, is epicsauce local favorite Mi Ami with Brooklyn's These Are Powers at The Knockout Friday. Featuring members of Dischord’s woefully underrated defunct dance-punk act Black Eyes, Mi Ami blends the dance heavy early 80s post-punk flavor of Liquid Liquid / ESG with the tribal influenced art-rock of their contemporary peers Gang Gang Dance. While no doubt leaning towards the experimental and at times noisy end of the spectrum, the drum and bass heavy grooves here are as dance friendly as !!! or The Rapture, and their chaotic live show is always a party -- be sure to catch these guys before they blow up.
