So what are the A's supposedly looking for? Basically somebody who gets out of the way and realizes it's Billy's team. A's managers can't have a big enough personality to overshadow Billy and can't have a big enough ego to want to overrule Billy. In fact, Beane famously said in "Moneyball" that the main responsibility of being a manager is to look good on the dugout steps. For all of Macha's problems in the clubhouse, according to the man himself, the main problem was that he wasn't doing what Billy wanted him to do. And when he did, it was already after he announced the opposite and so he was constantly damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
