Convenient for vacationing tourists who intend to stay in SF, this closure is inconvenient for those of us who live in the Bay Area who enjoy the City when the Burning Man brigade is out of town. It also puts the kibbosh on San Franciscans planning a trip to Ikea in Emeryville. Fortunately, this does not disrupt our tentative plans to see Deerhoof on September 5th at the
Great American Music Hall, or those planning to see the 49ers game on Friday, as CalTrans has thoughtfully scheduled the closure after said sporting event is over.(pdf)
And while we consider Labor Day Weekend in a less populated San Francisco a "major public event," apparently CalTrans doesn't agree. We are just glad that we don't have a wedding planned said weekend. It would take an exceptionally powerful bride to coerce Caltrans into postponing this.
In other Bay Bridge news, more CalTrans chiropractics, er, traffic lane realignment. You can watch a helpful video here. However, were you to look for a video simulation of the demolition of the East Span, you will be disappointed, as well as perhaps questioning CalTrans' planning process.
