Thomas Hawk shares this picture of a very, very quiet Bay Bridge from the Oakland side. According to the Mercury News, there were two closures during the day due to a suspicious package:

The Bay Bridge was shut down twice this morning in both directions while authorities investigated a suspicious package near Treasure Island, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The first closure occurred around 9 a.m. after Coast Guard officials spotted the item on the eastbound roadway, according to the CHP. The highway patrol shut down the bridge for about 10 minutes ``for safety reasons,'' CHP spokesman Mike Wright.

Thank goodness this happened on a quiet weekend morning -- had the bridge been shut down at 9am on Monday, more than a few commuters would have been royally screwed. Or question is why the Berkeley police was called. Do they have more experience with bomb removal than Oakland? Shouldn't this be an issue for the CHP?
