"During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred."

The suspect who was driving the vehicle and allegedly fired the shots attempteed to flee the scene on the foot, the department says, but was apprehended nearby. As SF Weekly characterized them in 2004, "SDI was a loose affiliation of neighborhood kids who came from good families, who went to good Catholic schools, who liked to party, and who loved to defend the honor of the neighborhood with their fists."

Some viewed them as a kind of gang that harassed people of color who came to Ocean Beach, as Mission Local notes, but they "largely managed to avoid the attention police focused on gangs in other neighborhoods."

Bigone was a local boxing enthusiast and part of a band called Whiskey Business. And he appears to have been a hard-partying dude into his 30s, when he got arrested in Lake County in 2004 after driving head-on into another vehicle on Highway 29 — and witnesses said he had been seen with a joint and a bottle of Wild Turkey just before the crash.

He was convicted of vehicular manslaugher, and served a possibly significant amount of prison time — it's unclear when he was released, but the description by friends' of how he'd been on the straight and narrow makes it sound somewhat recent. Most recently, Bigone had been working for the city as a general laborer, as Mission Local reports, and his city-issued, high-visibility work vest was displayed on the front gate of his home as part of a makeshift memorial. In the windows of his home were also American and Irish flags.

No arrest has been made in the case, and police have not discussed any possible motive for the shooting. Bigone was shot outside his home by a man who approached on a bicycle, in a beanie and mask, who produced a long gun, as seen in surveillance images released by police.

Officer Robert Rueca, public information officer for the SFPD, said in a statement to KTVU, "We are searching for the suspect and are scouring the neighborhood for evidence as well as any eyewitness statements anyone can provide."

Friends have been pouring out their grief on social media, with one saying, "I cant believe this is how he went down. Eric was no angel when we were young but he more than paid his dues throughout his life. He managed to turn his life around, put the hard work in to change, why this is doubly so sad to hear about."

This remains an open and active investigation. His lawyer says it was a case of poor investigative work by ICE.

ICE says it was seeking Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez because he was wanted for questioning in connection with a murder in El Salvador, and because he is a member of the Los Angeles-based 18th Street Gang, or Barrio 18. In reality, his lawyer said, Hernandez was acquitted seven years ago in the El Salvador case, and is now engaged to be married to a California woman.

On Tuesday around 6:30 am, ICE agents performed a targeted traffic stop in Patterson, California, near an onramp to I-5, south of Tracy, which was captured on dashcam video from a nearby vehicle. In the video, you can see Hernandez in a black hatchback attempting to flee the scene, and an ICE officer opening fire into the driver's side window of the car. Hernandez was struck and injured in a scene reminiscent of the Minneapolis shooting of Renee Good, and his current condition is not known.

Similar to the Minneapolis shooting, ICE is saying that Hernandez "weaponized" his car and threatened the life of an ICE agent, however the video does not show the car directly threatening the armed ICE officer, but rather trying to get away from him.

As the New York Times reports, attorney Patrick Kolasinski gave a news briefing Wednesday with Hernandez's fiancee Cindy by his side. The couple has a small child together.

"He cannot possibly have a warrant out for his arrest in El Salvador," Kolasinski said at the news briefing, and he produced a document showing the 2019 acquittal. “That is a complete misstatement. And even if that wasn’t the case, that wouldn’t be an excuse to shoot somebody in the situation that he was in."

As KTVU notes, Kolanski initially told the media that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity, insisting that his client was not a member of any gang.

Kolanski says that, according to his fiancee, Hernandez was pulled over last Friday by Turlock police and agrressively questioned about a cracked windshield. The police took down Hernandez's information, and this likely led to the ICE incident, though there is currently no evidence that Turlock police contacted ICE.

Hernandez works on rehabbing fire-damaged homes, and was reportedly on his way to the Bay Area Tuesday morning for a job. He is a dual citizen of Mexico and El Salvador, and ICE says that he came to the US illegally in 2019.

Kolanski says he has not been able to speak with his client and is not sure of his current immigration status. Hernandez's family also says the hospital where he is being treated has not yet allowed them in to see him, and his condition is not known, per KTVU.

Her family says police need to investigate the case further.

25-year-old Nation Wood was days away from leaving town, heading for basic training to join the Army National Guard, when he was allegedly "dry-firing" a handgun aimed at a wall in his apartment. His on-again off-again girlfriend, 22-year-old Samantha Emge, had just moved her stuff into his apartment, which he was handing over to her to live in, rent-free, while he was gone. She was on the other side of that wall, taking a shower.

A single bullet, which Wood allegedly did not know was in the chamber or magazine, penetrated the wall and a medicine cabinet and struck Emge in the head.

San Francisco police almost immediately tried to cast the incident as an accidental death, which on the surface it would seem to be. And within days, Wood would be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

But as the Chronicle reports, Emge's family is raising alarms about Wood, and about the relationship the young couple had in the months leading up to the shooting, which should cast some doubt on the clear-cut accident narrative.

Emge and Wood reportedly met on the SF State campus in December 2023, and Emge's family said their relationship was marked by several breakups and reconciliations, and that some of their tensions stemmed from Wood's problematic drinking. Also, friends of Emge say that Wood was clearly a controlling presence, who would impose arbitrary "curfews" on his girlfriend, even though they did not live together, and would text and call frequently if she was out somewhere without him.

The couple had most recently broken up in December 2025, but had reconciled again — according to Emge's mother, "I think her heart just bled for him."

Emge's family tells the Chronicle she had seemed "calmer" in recent months, after Wood decided to join the National Guard, enlisting in January, and was planning to relocate to Missouri for basic training. While he'd be paying the rent on his apartment during his absence, he had offered it to Emge so she could save money, and he'd reportedly moved his things into storage so that she could redecorate.

Wood is being represented by high-powered defense attorney Paula Canny — who was the original defense lawyer for Nima Momeni in the Bob Lee stabbing case — which in itself could be an indicator of the complications involved in this case. According to Canny, in a court filing, Wood had been sober for 15 months, at least to his family's knowledge, at the time of the shooting. And, Canny said, the case did not involve domestic violence in any traditional sense.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins gave a statement to the Chronicle, regarding the family's concerns, saying, "My office will continue to do everything we can to support [Emge's family] and seek justice in the courthouse for them... If any new evidence comes to light that is admissible in court and sufficient to meet our burden of proof, we may seek to file an amended complaint to reflect more or different charges from what was initially charged."

We likely won't learn much more about the case until it goes to trial, and we may never know what transpired in the apartment in the hours before the shooting took place. Wood has reportedly been checked into a psychiatric facility after alleged suicidal threats.

Previously: Suspect Says He Was 'Dry-Firing' Gun When 22-Year-Old Samantha Emge Was Killed

Suspect Says He Was 'Dry-Firing' Gun When 22-Year-Old Samantha Emge Was Killed

The 25-year-old man who was arrested last week for the killing of his 22-year-old girlfriend in the Sunset District reportedly told police that he was dry-firing his gun when he accidentally fired the fatal shot, apparently not knowing the gun was loaded.

SF News

sunset district

shootings

homicides

Jay Barmann

The 25-year-old man who was arrested last week for the killing of his 22-year-old girlfriend in the Sunset District reportedly told police that he was dry-firing his gun when he accidentally fired the fatal shot, apparently not knowing the gun was loaded.

She was in the shower, and he was apparently sitting or standing nearby when the gun accidentally went off, and 22-year-old Samantha Emge was killed, according to a new report. The victim, however, was shot in the back and was only armed with pepper spray.

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office has charged 37-year-old Sefanaia Alatini with murder in connection with the February 11 shooting on the 100 block of Turk Street. The incident, which took place in a small gated parking lot near Aunt Charlie's Lounge just before 9 am on a Wednesday morning, was captured on surveillance video.

Alatini works as a security guard for the parking lot, and according to prosecutors, video shows the unnamed victim engaging Alataini in a conversation. This is "followed by Mr. Alatini walking away and returning with a firearm," at which point the two continued to exchange words, and the victim then allegedly pulled out a small bottle and sprayed it in the direction of Alatini before turning to walk away.

"The video then allegedly shows Mr. Alatini shoot the victim in his back," the DA's Office says in a release.

The victim has not been publicly identified, and it's unclear whether the suspect and victim knew one another. Alatini apparently remained at the scene and was arrested later that same day.

The parking lot where the shooting took place, via Google Street View

The bottle that the victim pulled out was apparently pepper spray, and the DA's office does not believe that Alatini shot the victim in self-defense.

"What we did see is a brandishing of a firearm prior to the victim ever displaying pepper spray and/or using that pepper spray," says District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, per NBC Bay Area. "So actually in that sense, it would support the victim having used some form of self defense."

Alatini's arraignment happened Wednesday morning, and he was expected to plead not guilty. Prosecutors are asking that he be held without bail, due to the violence of the crime and due to a prior felony conviction from 2013 in Hawaii.

Public defenders are arguing that Alatini is a beloved member of his community, and over a dozen family members and friends were in court to support him Wednesday morning, as NBC Bay Area reports.

We'll update you once we learn the judge's decision regarding bail.

Previously: San Francisco Sees Another Homicide, the Second In a Week

49er Keion White Shot In Alleged Altercation Involving Rapper Lil Baby at Super Bowl Party Featuring Strippers

Some more details have been reported about how 49ers defensive lineman Keion White ended up being shot in the ankle early Monday morning in the Mission District.

SF News

Bay Area Sports

49ers

Niners

nightclub shooting

shootings

Mission District

Super Bowl

Jay Barmann

Some more details have been reported about how 49ers defensive lineman Keion White ended up being shot in the ankle early Monday morning in the Mission District.

When we first heard the news about Niners DL Keion White being hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the ankle Monday, we did not know where the shooting took place — just that it was at a party in the Mission District following the Super Bowl.

Now we know that the incident occurred at or outside a party that the 27-year-old White himself was throwing at Dahlia, the tequila-focused bar/club that was formerly known as the Armory Club, at 1799 Mission Street. According to reports from police and witnesses gathered by the SF Standard, the private party involved strippers and/or adult entertainers, and was "downstairs" in the venue.

SFist notes that Dahlia offers a basement-level Champagne Room that can be rented for private parties, so that was likely the party room in question.

Dahlia, at 14th and Mission, via Google Street View

The shooting occurred around 4 am Monday, and it appears the party was still raging at that hour. Per the Standard, Atlanta-based rapper Lil Baby, aka Dominique Jones, had arrived with his entourage and tried to get into the private event — in the hours after Lil Baby was performing at this Sunday night event at The Grand nightclub in SoMa.

A witness reportedly told police that they saw White get into an argument with the rapper, possibly because he was refusing to let Lil Baby and his group in to the downstairs party. The witness further said that they went upstairs, to the main level of Dahlia, to seek help from staff. It was not long after this that a shot or two were fired, though it's not clear where the shots came from. The witness returned to the basement and found White shot in the leg, and White was reportedly uncooperative with police when asked who had shot him.

Arriving police told the Standard that they saw topless women gathering dollar bills on the bar when they entered the room.

White underwent surgery on his ankle on Monday, and KTVU reported, via a Niners spokesperson, that he was out of surgery Monday night and the procedure was successful — but no timeline for his recovery was provided.

This is the only act of violence we've learned of so far from Super Bowl Weekend in San Francisco, and Mayor Daniel Lurie issued a statement Monday night in response.

"Any violent incident in our city is unacceptable, and I’m hoping Keion recovers quickly," Lurie said. "I’ve spoken with SFPD and 49ers leadership — we are all grateful to our SFPD officers for their quick response. As always, I will continue working with San Francisco law enforcement to ensure our neighborhoods and our residents are safe."

No arrests have been made, and anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444, or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.” Tipsters can remain anonymous.

Top image: Keion White #56 of the San Francisco 49ers in the locker room before the game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on November 2, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
