The woman said to be part of the entourage of Mackayla "Kash" Paige who apparently shot her by accident while attempting to pistol whip another woman who was fighting Paige has been identified as Paige's sister.
38-year-old Vernika Dunbar has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her sister, 29-year-old Mackayla Paige, early Sunday morning in downtown Oakland. Paige, also known as Kash on several reality TV programs, was allegedly shot during a fight that was caught on video outside the nightclub Cave at 14th and Harrison streets around 1:30 am Sunday.
As KTVU reports, Dunbar is Paige's older sister, and both women lived in Richmond. Dunbar has also been charged with firearm and gun violations in connection with the attempted pistol-whipping.
As SFist noted previously, Paige had appeared on at least three streaming reality shows, Real West Coast Baddies on the Nyx Network, and Young and Reckless and Room H8's on the platform NowThatsTV.
The shows, like the show Baddies — an episode of which was being shot at the Warfield two Fridays ago when a separate fatal shooting occurred — center on women partying, egos clashing, and having physical fights with each other.
Paige and her sister were apparently at Cave on Saturday night for an event billed as a birthday party for local DJ Butta Smoove.
The women were seen in an Instagram story partying just hours before the tragic shooting took place.
The video that surfaced appeared to show Paige getting into a fight on the sidewalk outside the club with another woman, and in an effort to break up the fight or injure the other woman, Dunbar allegedly pulled out a gun and tried to pistol-whip her. According to reports, the gun accidentally went off shooting Paige in the neck, and the other woman was unharmed.
