A retired SFPD sergeant is suspected of fatally shooting his estranged wife, who was a retired SFPD deputy chief, and their 24-year-old daughter before fatally shooting himself in their Marin County home Sunday.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the family’s home in an unincorporated community near Mill Valley shortly after 5 pm Sunday after receiving a 911 call reporting gunshots inside the residence, as ABC 7 reports. Deputies reportedly arrived within minutes and found three people dead.

According to investigators, Kevin Mannix, 68, a retired SFPD sergeant, allegedly shot his estranged wife, Ann Mannix, 65, a retired SFPD deputy chief, and their 24-year-old daughter, Katie, before turning the gun on himself. The sheriff’s office has not publicly confirmed the identities of the victims or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

A neighbor told the Chronicle that she and her daughter were in their front yard when they heard a man yelling from the home. Another man then ran through the gate, shouting, “Please call 911, he has a gun!” before gunshots rang out.

Detectives spent Sunday night processing the scene, and authorities said they were waiting for a judge to approve a search warrant for a more thorough examination of the home. The sheriff’s office said there had been no previous calls for service at the address and that there was no known threat to the surrounding community.

The Chronicle reports that Ann Mannix joined SFPD’s command staff in 2018 as deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau and took over the Special Operations Bureau the following year. She reportedly retired in 2021 after a career that included becoming the first woman to join and later lead the department’s SWAT team.

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Mannix grew up in the Jordan Park neighborhood and attended public schools in the Richmond District.

Both Ann and Kevin Mannix had been with the department for 27 years prior to their retirements.

SFPD Chief Derrick Lew said the department’s behavioral science unit was available to employees seeking support following the deaths.

“Please keep their family in your prayers,” said Lew.
