Over 7,000 SF Residents and Businesses Lost Power Monday Morning In Unplanned Outage

Upwards of 6,600 PG&E customers — representing well over 10,000 residents and businesses, if not closer to 20,000 — were without power Monday morning as PG&E deals with yet another unplanned outage.

Monday's unplanned outage began around 11:38 am, as KRON4 reports, and was impacting parts of Corona Heights, Haight-Ashbury, Duboce Triangle, Castro, and the Mission District. Similar unplanned outages occurred earlier this year affecting these same areas — leading to PG&E deploying a temporary generator in the Castro — and two weeks ago, an unplanned outage closed down the Ferry Building and impacted part of the Embarcadero.

The initial outage map on Monday, seen below, showed a wide swath of the Mission District impacted. But a PG&E spokesperson told the Chronicle, "We were able to restore more than half of the affected customers almost immediately by switching them to an unaffected distribution line."

Subsequently, PG&E said that the outage was continuing to impact "2,950 remaining customers" as of 12:40 pm, with the impact appearing to be concentrated in Corona Heights/Upper Market, several blocks of the Castro near Market Street, several blocks along Guerrero Street, and the 16th Street corridor.

The cause of the outage remains unclear, however for part of the Castro around Market, Noe, and Sanchez streets, this is repeat of a similar outage that took days to repair back in early July — impacting residents as well as bars that were trying to show World Cup matches.

It's been a bad 12 months overall for PG&E and its infrastructure in San Francisco, following that massive outage the weekend before Christmas impacting half the city, which led to outages that went on for weeks into the new year for certain neighborhoods. Around 7,000 PG&E customers also lost power during that March heatwave.

As today's outage continued, PG&E said, "[We] have a troubleworker (PG&E first responder) on scene making assessments and determining repairs."
