A Fleet Week-themed Fridays on Front Street event is happening today (October 9), featuring bands playing yacht rock covers, a screening of Top Gun, a best mustache contest, and free oysters.

The block party series known as Fridays on Front Street returns this evening with the last event of the year, and tied to Fleet Week it will be yacht rock/80s themed. The bands Wonder Bread 5 and Haulin’ Oates will be performing live yacht rock covers, along with other favorites from the 70s and 80s. And, as always, it will be a festive time on the block of Front Street between California and Sacramento that is home to Harrington's, Schroeder's, and the Royal Exchange.

The party starts at 4 pm and goes until 9 pm, and admission is free. Nonetheless, attendees are encouraged to RSVP here.

This section of Front Street was, as you may recall, California's first ever designated Entertainment Zone post-pandemic, established in 2024, allowing the bars to sell to-go drinks during designated event times like this.

Today's event, with the yacht rock and 80s themes, is going to feature a screening of Top Gun to mark the film's 40th anniversary, a best mustache contest, free captain hats and sunglasses for the first 100 guests, a yacht rock lip sync battle, and free oysters from The Oyster Girls, "while supplies last."

There's also going to be an 80s-themed "beauty bar," with fake mustaches, apparent, and "throwback bling," and a photo booth in a vintage Volkswagen.

This is the third and final Fridays on Front Street event of 2026, with the last one, in August, featuring a Golden State Valkyries theme, because it coincided with a game night and had a big-screen watch party.

The success of the Front Street Entertainment Zone events spawned many more of these booze-friendly Entertainment Zones, with the city now home to a total of 30. These include zones in Cole Valley, the Castro, and the Fillmore that also now host regular night markets and other events.
