Day Around the Day: Sonoma County Issues Emergency Proclamation Ahead of Heavy El Niño Winter

Local:

  • Sonoma County supervisors followed Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent lead by issuing an emergency proclamation ahead of an El Niño season expected to bring heavy winter rain, directing county agencies to prepare vulnerable infrastructure and coordinate flood response with local, tribal and state partners.   • The SFPD says five suspects were arrested in September for allegedly stealing more than $19,000 worth of merchandise from the REI store on Brannan Street in a series of thefts. [SFPD]
  • A San Francisco developer is suing the South Bay city of Menlo Park to force the approval of a massive mixed-use project with 665 homes, retail, offices and a hotel at the former Sunset Magazine headquarters, arguing the city violated state housing laws. [KQED]

  • Olympic canoeist David Hearn is calling for an investigation into his five-hour detention by National Park Police in July after he stuck his hand in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Hearn was accused of causing damage and was initially indicted on a charge of felony destruction of government property, but the charges were later dismissed after it was revealed that the damage had been caused by a contractor's “botched installation.” [CBS News]
  • An Arizona appeals court has overturned a man’s 10-and-a-half -year prison sentence for manslaughter in a 2021 road rage shooting after an AI-generated video depicting his slain victim was shown during his sentencing hearing, and a date for has not been set yet for his resentencing. [ABC News]
  • Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking after surviving a failed lethal injection six days ago. [CNN]

  • During public comment at the SF Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Transportation Committee meeting Monday, activist leftylea_in_sf voiced support for a moratorium and a future ban on data centers — the board passed a 45-day moratorium Wednesday. Lea pointed out that the public has not been informed about two new data centers potentially being developed in District 6, including an Amazon facility at 900 Seventh Street and a separate data center at 101 Utah Street, noting that there was supposed to be a town hall scheduled, which reportedly never took place.
