A Monterey County father and his 14-year-old daughter, who apparently gave birth by the side of the road in early August before allegedly killing the newborn infant, have been located and the father arrested in Mexico.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday that it had "received confirmation" that the 14-year-old girl, identified as Diana Galvez Ortega, had been rescued, as she is now being treated as a victim in this case. Initially, authorities were seeking both father and daughter on suspicion of infanticide.

Mexican authorities reportedly arrested 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez after finding him in possession of narcotics.

"Mexican authorities are aware of the pending charges against [Galvez Perez] in Monterey County for crimes committed against Diana. Diana is safe and is currently in the care of local authorities in Mexico," said Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto, in a statement.

The sheriff's office further said that this remains an open and active investigation, and a press conference would be scheduled for a later date.

Galvez Perez and his daughter have been on the run since August 1, when the infant was discovered by the side of a road in Moss Landing, a town halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey. The child was found dead with traumatic injuries, and it was believed that either father or daughter, or both, killed the child immediately after it was born.

The girl's mother, 36-year-old Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. She and Galvez Perez, who are married, were listed as residents of Salinas and Castroville.

The girl's name and photograph were shared publicly when an Amber Alert was issued last month.

Galvez Perez is reportedly a Mixtec musician who performs under the name El Aguila Real y su Ritmo Sabroso. In addition to the murder of the infant, he is accused of incest, lewd or lascivious acts involving a child, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment, and child endangerment.

It remains unclear when he might be extradited back to Monterey County.
