Day Around the Bay: California Bans Child Marriage Following Nine-Year Effort

Local:

  • Manny Yekutiel dropped out of the District 8 Supervisor race just hours after new sexual assault allegations surfaced against him. Former Pelosi aide Gary McCoy, who is also openly gay and has the endorsement of several local clubs and politicians, is now the frontrunner in the race. [SFist]
  • Joseph Stevens, 22, was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the chance of parole in the 2005 deaths of 22-year-old Dernae Wysinger and his 2-year-old son in Potrero Hill. Prosecutors said Stevens fired 18 shots into the parked vehicle, and the child’s mother and Wysinger’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Jazmanika Ridout, was also injured but survived the shooting.   • Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law banning marriage for anyone under 18, making California the 18th state to outlaw child marriage after years of legislative attempts and opposition from groups including the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. [CalMatters]
  • New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has appointed Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to investigate the alleged 2024 gang rape at a Cornell University fraternity, five days after the local district attorney announced he was reopening the case. [ABC News]
  • Sean “Diddy” Combs has reportedly been moved to solitary confinement at a New Jersey federal prison after an NBC News report detailed his alleged VIP treatment there, including contraband cellphones, premium liquor and inmates paid to cook, clean and massage him. [NBC News]
