Man Identified As NYT Games Engineer Reportedly Killed By In-Laws In Dublin

A man was fatally shot Saturday at the Dublin Sports Grounds, and witnesses say that his in-laws, a couple in their late 70s, "took turns" shooting him.

The incident happened in a crowded parking lot at the Dublin Sports Grounds around 3:10 pm Saturday. The facility is a 22-acre city park that includes soccer and baseball fields, and it remains unclear what led up to the shooting or what the motive was.

As KTVU reports, a Dublin Police Services sergeant happened to be driving by just after the shooting occurred and found 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey on the ground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

There were apparently multiple witnesses to the shooting, and Dublin resident Kevin Stein tells KTVU, "There were kids and families, just like you see now. This parking lot is full on a Saturday... It's incredible that they'd just do that right in front of everybody."

Dublin police say that they were able to locate the suspects "within minutes," and that they had not gone far.

They have been identified as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 76 or 77 years old, and they are reportedly McKinsey's father-in-law and mother-in-law. The couple allegedly took turns taking shots at their son-in-law.

As the Chronicle reports, McKinsey was director of engineering for New York Times Games, and the Times has confirmed that he had worked there for about three years.

Dublin resident Assad Razawi, a witness to the shooting, tells the Chronicle that he heard five or six shots and saw McKinsey drop to the ground. He then describes the suspects as walking calmly away from the scene.

It's unclear if there were children present at the scene, but per the Chronicle, Zhang and Chen were both arrested on suspicion of murder, as well as child endangerment.

McKinsey apparently had a bit of a record in Alameda County, with a charge of misdemeanor child abuse that was filed last year, as the Chronicle reports. A woman, presumably McKinsey's wife, called Dublin police and reported that McKinsey had struck their six-year-old son in the face with an open hand. There was also a charge of child neglect connected to the incident, relating to a two-year-old child who was found unattended in McKinsey's home when police went there to locate him about the slapping incident — the child was apparently left there while McKinsey went out shopping.

McKinsey reportedly pled guilty to both crimes and was court-ordered to attend parenting classes.

McKinsey and his family lived in the Courtyards at Dublin Ranch Villages, and as the Chronicle reports via neighbors, McKinsey had recently moved out of the home, suggesting that the couple was separated.

Zhang and Chen are scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
