Late last week we learned that a Thursday morning fishing boat crash near the Golden Gate Bridge had resulted in one death, and now we're learning the identity of the victim.
35-year-old Zhengyu "Daniel" Qin was an avid fisherman and a software engineer at Apple with three children — an 11-year-old son and two daughters, ages 9 and 3. Qin was out on an early morning fishing trip with two others on Thursday, September 17 when their boat crashed into some rocks near the Golden Gate Bridge and capsized.
Later on Thursday we learned that two people were injured and one, Qin, was killed.
"His sudden passing has left his wife and children facing an unimaginable loss, both emotionally and financially," writes family friend Cathy Wu on a GoFundMe fundraiser posted on behalf of Qin's wife, Yao Deng.
"Zhengyu was kind, funny, and endlessly generous," Wu adds. "He got along effortlessly with his coworkers, his children looked up to him, and his friends adored him. Wu noted that Qin would often share his catch from fishing trips with friends, and "He leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity that will live on through his three children."
The tragic accident happened just after 6 am Thursday, near the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Two people on the boat ended up in the water after the boat began to capsize. The SFPD Marine Unit and the US Coast Guard assisted with the rescue, and all three people who had been on the boat were treated at a Marin County hospital, which is where Qin was pronounced dead.
All three victims were reportedly wearing life jackets, and Qin's cause of death remains unclear.
The cause of the crash also remains under investigation.
According to the GoFundMe, all funds raised will be managed by Qin's wife and will go toward funeral expenses and the children's day-to-day needs in the months ahead.
The fundraiser has so far raised over $60,000.
