BART service was temporarily disrupted after a piece of plastic caught fire on the trackway near the 24th Street/Mission Station in San Francisco, leading to residual delays throughout the system.
BART initially reported major delays in all directions Thursday as crews dealt with a problem on the track near 24th and Mission. As the Chronicle reports, a piece of plastic debris caught fire in the trackway near 24th Street/Mission Station, with Muni providing service between Daly City and Embarcadero as an alternative. The fire was not caused by BART equipment, a spokesperson for the agency said.
Red Line service between Richmond and SFO was also temporarily suspended, with a shuttle operating between Millbrae and SFO, while Green Line service was limited between 24th Street/Mission and Berryessa.
Both service restrictions were lifted by midafternoon. Red Line trains resumed direct service between Richmond and Millbrae, and Green Line trains were again running directly between Berryessa and Daly City.
BART was still reporting residual delays on the San Francisco line as of 3:28 pm, with trains toward Berryessa running about 20 minutes late and those toward Antioch delayed by about 10 minutes.
The disruption came after several days of significant service problems elsewhere in the system. Earlier this month, a fire near Daly City damaged a traction-power substation, train control equipment, and a traction-power cable. BART said extreme heat and aging infrastructure appeared to have contributed to that incident.
“I want to apologize to our riders who’ve had some really terrible experiences over the past 48 hours,” Board Director Edward Wright said during a board meeting last Thursday, according to the Chronicle. “I don’t think we instinctively do that enough.”
BART had restored systemwide service following the earlier incident, but Thursday’s trackway fire caused another round of problems for riders traveling through San Francisco.
