Drag kings and performers from the Bay Area and beyond will deconstruct the meaning of “true brotherly love” at Great American Music Hall Saturday for “Dirty 30,” a celebration of the iconic SF contest’s 30th year.
The annual San Francisco Drag King Contest — the longest-running drag king contest in the world — is marking its 30th year Saturday with “Dirty 30,” a night built around parodying and challenging traditional ideas of masculinity. As the Chronicle reports, the contest will be hosted by Fudgie Frottage and Sister Roma, with Trixxie Carr, Fontaine Blue, and Papi Churro among the celebrity judges.
DJ Junkyard will provide the music, while performers Leigh Crow, Rusty Hips, Madd Dogg 20/20, Misterrr, and Howie Weenis are also slated to appear. The evening will reportedly include a “Lipsynch For Your Life” segment featuring as many contestants as possible.
“Come bust a nut with us while we party like there's no tomorrow,” says the event’s website.
According to the Bay Area Reporter, “Dirty 30” also marks the return of NYC and LA-based Mo B. Dick, a pioneering drag king who is celebrating 30 years in the art form himself. Dick first discovered the San Francisco drag king scene in 1995 and later reached a wider audience with his appearance in John Waters’ 1998 cult film Pecker, where he played T-Bone, a lesbian stripper portrayed with a drag king twist.
Dick has also spent years documenting the history of drag king performance through DragKingHistory.com, a community-funded digital archive focused on female-born performers who dress in traditionally male attire.
Proceeds from the contest will reportedly benefit Rocket Dog Rescue and PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support), which provides comprehensive support for companion animals belonging to low-income people living with HIV and other disabling illnesses.
While the contest has always been held at Oasis nightclub, the BAR notes that this year's event was moved to Great American Music Hall after Oasis came under threat of closure last year.
