20-Year-Old Man Allegedly Kills Father While Protecting Mother In East Bay Domestic Incident

A 20-year-old son allegedly stabbed his father to death in a domestic incident in Castro Valley on Saturday while trying to defend his mother.

The family altercation took place around 1:30 pm Saturday at a residence on Parsons Avenue near Seven Hills Road. As KTVU reports, the family had lived in the home for about a year.

According to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the father, a 51-year-old man, was engaged in a physical confrontation with the mother, and the son reportedly heard his mother "in distress." The son then stabbed the father with an "edged weapon," and the father later died at the hospital.

The son has been identified as 20-year-old John Thomas Powell, and he is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder, according to the sheriff's office.

As the Chronicle reports, it's not clear whether the mother or son also suffered any injuries, and it was unclear whether authorities had ever responded to previous domestic incidents at this address.

A neighbor, Nora Patterson, tells KTVU that she saw Powell being led away in handcuffs. "It's tragic, you know? He lost his life. And the poor guy was only 20 years old, and he was trying to protect his mom, supposedly," Patterson tells the station.

A legal analyst tells KTVU that the case will likely come down to the question of how much physical danger the mother was in, which will dictate whether Powell may face charges of manslaughter or justifiable homicide.
