Authorities are investigating two separate claims of cargo theft at an Anheuser-Busch distribution center in Montclair earlier this month that apparently included the loss of 40,000 pounds of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. The total value of the missing cargo is estimated to be $70,000.

As the Chronicle reports, the alleged thefts both took place on August 17 and may have involved the use of fraudulent documentation. Police suggest that such a ploy allowed for the thieves, purporting to be a subcontracting company, to abscond with two cargo deliveries within an hour worth $45,000 and $25,000, respectively.

Neither of the shipments meant to be delivered by the supposed subcontracting company ever reached their final destinations, prompting Montclair Police to investigate.

For its part, the social media team at Pabst Blue Ribbon seems to be taking the incident in stride, making a series of humorous posts befitting of a brand best known for its reliable affordability.

"We don’t fault you for wanting to brag to your friends how much PBR you have," they wrote on Instagram while addressing the yet-to-be-captured culprits. "We just wish you obtained it the honorable way."

The company then offered the thieves a deadline of 18 days to safely return of their precious suds and face no consequences. Later in the post, they confirmed that PBR was "deadly serious" about the offer and expressed concern over whether the new, unapproved owner of their brews "knows the importance of keeping beer cold."

While one of PBR's posts mentions the return of a truck, Montclair Police officials told the Chronicle that no trucks — only cargo — was reported stolen. Authorities have yet to publicly identify any suspects or announce any arrests in the case.

To that end, as part of the beer company's self-imposed deadline to have their cargo returned without punishment, they've also called on the public to provide tips in exchange for an unspecified reward.

This new PBR heist follows a 2024 incident detailed by the Chronicle in which two freight trucks packed with $1 million worth of tequila from a brand co-owned by Bay Area celebrities Sammy Hagar and Guy Fieri were stolen in Texas while en route to California and Pennsylvania.
