A car crashed into the back of a Muni bus, causing little apparent damage to the bus, but crushing the front end of the car which then caught fire on McAllister Street Thursday evening.

The incident happened around 5:20 pm Thursday, on McAllister Street between Divisadero and Broderick streets. A gray, two-door BMW traveling westbound appeared to have crashed into the back of a 5-Fulton bus and subsequently caught fire.

The SF Department of Emergency Management sent out an alert to avoid the area of Divis and McAllister at 5:52 pm, but the scene was largely quieting down by that point.

An ambulance was on the scene but the injuries incurred by the driver of the BMW are not known, or if there were any passengers. The Citizen app had a report of one person injured. The car's open trunk appeared to have grocery bags in it.

Multiple SFFD fire engines were on the scene and the blaze was extinguished by 5:50 pm, though the 5-Fulton and 5R-Fulton lines were heavily impacted, with buses re-routing around the collision scene onto Golden Gate Avenue. Several buses also became stuck and unable to maneuver around the emergency vehicles on the scene.

The bus that appeard to be hit did not have any visible damage, with the car possible wedging itself under the rear bumber of the bus before catching fire.

This is the third emergency to occur in the neighborhood in just 48 hours, with a significant rollover crash two blocks away at Divisadero and Grove streets on Tuesday, and a major fire at Fulton and Fillmore early this morning, with 18 apartment residents requiring rescue.
