Six people, including teens and adults, were injured while taking part in a bass fishing tournament in Contra Costa County when two boats collided — with one reportedly landing on top of the other.
Six people were injured early Saturday when two boats collided during a high school fishing tournament organized by the Student Angler Federation in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta near Brentwood, which began shortly before 7 am.
Authorities say one boat slowed in a posted 5-mph zone while another traveling behind it did not, as KTVU reports. The speeding boat reportedly rode up and over the second vessel on impact and ejected several people into the water.
Witnesses described the force of the crash as violent, with the speeding boat being sent 15 to 20 feet into the air and both vessels pushed in opposite directions.
“Our boats get up on a plane doing about 45, 55 mph, but there's one location down the slough that has a - mph zone,” said boat captain John Wolfe, who was nearby when the crash occurred. “One of the boats slowed down to go 5, the other boat that was behind it went right up on top, off to the side, and it wasn't pretty."
Wolfe told KTVU that three people were ejected from one boat and their life vests deployed, while the others sustained more serious injuries. Witnesses said one boater had injuries to their spine, arm, and face, and another was screaming.
Nearby competitors reportedly reached the scene first, pulling victims from the water and towing the damaged boats back to shore before Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews arrived.
Organizers said each boat carried two student anglers and an adult operator, and boating rules and safety protocols were reviewed prior to the tournament, per KTVU.
“First of all, it's super unfortunate. There are a lot of rules,” said boat captain Brad Soto. “Everyone has a boater's card, everyone's up to legal and then the tournament director went over all the list of rules and stuff like that pre-tournament.”
Four people were taken to local hospitals. One teen suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, and one adult remained hospitalized overnight.
KTVU reports that the fishing tournament resumed after the crash, with the winning teams qualifying for a national championship in Kentucky this summer.
