Mahna Mahna! Your WNBA Golden State Valkyries busted out their new mascot Violet at Monday night’s game, and this very Muppet-resembling mascot is capable of doing the splits and back handsprings.
The women's basketball league WNBA has been desperate to make some news about anything other than dildos being thrown onto the court during games. The first-year Golden State Valkyries have done their best to oblige, teasing a promotional stunt last Thursday with a giant purple egg in front of the Chase Center. It all seemed pretty obvious that this was leading up to some sort of mascot reveal, and indeed that was the case, as KTVU reports that the Valkyries premiered their new mascot Monday night, an anthropomorphic raven known as Violet.

Violet is purple-feathered and sports a large, round pair of glasses, a Valkyries jersey and a mini-skirt with feather detailing on the back, high-top tube socks, and athletic sneakers. She now has a Twitter account and has thus far gained a little over 1,000 followers. But the mascot game has clearly evolved for the better, for as seen below, Violet can do the splits in a full mascot costume. You can also see her do cartwheels and back handsprings if you’re willing to sit through this minute-long video.

As KGO explains, Violet is a raven, a tie-in to the whole Norse mythology lore from which the Valkyries get their name. That station notes that “ravens commonly appear in Norse mythology and symbolize knowledge, wisdom, and memory.”

USA Today has some reaction that Violet is being compared to the WNBA’s New York Liberty mascot Ellie the Elephant, who is also known for surprisingly good dance moves for a mascot. The Chronicle's Scott Oster oddly takes this opportunity to have an imaginary conversation with former, short-lived Giants mascot Crazy Crab. And in other jokes that take way too long to develop and never really become funny, the team did some halftime skit with Warriors backup center Quinten Post where he tried to teach Violet how to shoot a basket.

Whether Violet helped or not, the Valkyries ended up winning Monday night’s game 74-57 over the Connecticut Sun. That leaves the team with a current 16-15 record. As the WNBA standings sit now, that would qualify them for the No 7 playoff spot (eight teams in the league make the playoffs). And we are just one month out from the beginning of those 2025 WNBA playoffs.
