The Vallejo Police Department isn’t going to like this — an SF street in Bernal Heights has been renamed in honor of Sean Monterrosa, who that department killed at the height of the George Floyd protests.

When the George Floyd protests were sweeping the nation in May and June of 2020, one flashpoint in the Bay Area was the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Sean Monterossa on June 2, 2020. The Vallejo Police Department alleged that Monterrosa was about to participate in a looting at a Walgreens in that town, though body-worn camera footage showed Monterrosa was on his knees when shot, and that police did not ascertain whether he was armed before firing five rounds at him. Investigations after that shooting showed that Vallejo PD officers were bending their badges to celebrate fatal shootings, further contributing to that department’s trigger-happy reputation.

The Vallejo PD surely will not be happy with the news, as KGO reports, that San Francisco just named a street after Sean Monterrosa. The block at Holly Park Circle and Park Street in Bernal Heights has been renamed Sean Monterrosa Boulevard, as Monterrosa grew up on that street, and attended Junipero Serra Elementary School which is also on that street.

“It was really important for our family to create these physical beacons where we can honor Sean,” his sister Michelle Monterrosa told Mission Local in March.

Yes, the SF Board of Supervisors did approve this street renaming this past March. At that meeting, family members argued that Monterrosa had been an active volunteer in community groups like 7 Teepees, Horizons Unlimited, and the Excelsior Boys and Girls Club.

It’s not the only Sean Monterrosa homage in San Francisco. As seen below, there is also a commemorative mural of him at 24th Street and South Van Ness Avenue.
