Unlike at the height of the pandemic, when everyone decided they needed a pet — including some with a lack of self-awareness or foresight — there are now plenty of adoptable animals to be found. And the glut may be in part because people's pandemic pets turned out to be too much responsibility in a post-pandemic world.
It's true, the pandemic is still not completely behind us and cases are quite high. But mostly everyone is back to normal routines, and in some cases that has meant they no longer have time for dog-walking and such. Sadly that means that animal shelters around the country are filling up with abandoned pets again, including SF's SPCA shelter in the Mission.
The SPCA put out the call on Twitter on Monday, dubbing this their Summer of Lovin' event, with all adoption fees waived on "adult" dogs aged 5 months or older.
"Our shelter is full and we need our pups to find their forever homes so we can help more animals," the shelter tweeted. The shelter is especially full of larger breeds, including Elle Woods, seen below.

As Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, head of the San Francisco SPCA, tells KPIX, "When you adopt, you're not just saving one animal's life, you're also opening space in our shelter so we can save another animal. If you've been thinking about adopting, now is a great time. Our shelter is full and we have a huge variety of dogs — especially bigger dogs."
Pandemic-related delays in getting dogs their spay and neuter surgeries has also reportedly made the crowding in shelters worse.
You can see dogs available for adoption at the SFPCA Mission shelter here, and Animal Care & Control — which is also waiving adoption fees — has 11 dogs in their shelter currently who are available for adoption as well.
The SFPCA is open for visits from noon to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday.
