The SFPD does not suspect foul play in the death of an infant whose remains were found on Saturday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.

As the Examiner reports, Police Chief Bill Scott said during the Police Commission meeting on Wednesday that investigators believe the baby was abandoned by its mother after being stillborn. The investigation remains open, but Scott reportedly said that detectives have not determined that the death was the result of a criminal act.

The SFPD continues to want to locate the infant mother's, and previously said they were concerned for her health.

The baby's body was found by golfers Saturday afternoon, after which police were called to the scene believing this could be a homicide investigation.

The city's homicide count for 2019 stands at 33, and the city remains on track to see a historic low homicide rate for the year if things hold steady. On Wednesday, SFPD Deputy Chief Greg McEachern announced that the city could see the lowest murder rate in 17 years this year. "If we continue this trend for the next month and a half, it will be the lowest we’ve seen in decades," McEachern told KPIX.
