The couple found dead at a Sonoma coast campground Wednesday have been identified as Robert and Maria Wade, aged 71 and 72 respectively.

The pair had been residents of Guerneville for many years, and as the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports, they had apparently been living at the Ocean Cove Campground in Timber Cove, north of Jenner, where they had been known to visit every year.

The campsite near Highway 1 where the Wades were found had a tent, several coolers, and an RV, and police had responded there once before on February 25 when Maria Wade was threatening to take her own life. Mrs. Wade was reportedly suicidal over a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer, and was holding a gun to her own head. Police at the time confiscated two firearms.

On Wednesday, Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies and Timber Cove volunteer firefighters went to the campsite following a 911 call from the couple's daughter. She reported getting a phone call from her father saying that he had shot and killed her mother.

According to Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Crum, Robert Wade had health problems of his own, and the couple "had increasingly serious financial problems."

The incident follows another murder-suicide earlier this month in Sonoma County, when an estranged husband shot his wife in a Santa Rosa parking lot before turning the gun on himself.
