The recently embattled Castro Street Fair, which had kind of a bad go of it last year, has retooled itself for 2017 as a slightly smaller fair, removing itself from Market Street for the first time in decades. As we learned back in January, rising costs to produce the fair include fees to Muni for the re-routing of buses, and this may have played into the decision to avoid having to close the section of Market Street between Collingwood and Noe. But executive director of the fair Fred Lopez previously told the BAR that it also has to do with a decreasing number of exhibitors and vendors.

As you can see on the map below, the fair is now primarily confined to Castro Street between 17th and 19th, and 18th between Collingwood and Noe. Gone is the stage that used to be on 18th near Collingwood, and in its place is now the food vendor area. The Dance Alley remains in place behind Walgreens, and the Main Stage moves from Market to the opposite side, on Castro near 19th.

Dance Alley DJs for the afternoon are Matthew Paul & Trevor Sigler, e’Lish, and Siobhan Aluvalot, and that schedule is here.

Headlining the Main Stage, which has a variety of drag performers and others throughout the day, is rapper-performer Boyfriend, who goes on at 5:30 p.m. after a brief DJ set by Josette Melchor.

And as always, there's the Western-themed Sundance Saloon dance area, which this year will be down by 18th and Noe.

Having been founded by Harvey Milk in 1974, Castro Street Fair is one the longest-running LGBT-centric outdoor festivals in the country.

The fair goes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 1.
