A woman was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries Sunday afternoon, after police say that an unknown attacker doused her with bleach.

The assault happened at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, on the first block of Mason Street, which is between Market and Eddy Streets.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the 57-year-old female victim was sitting on the sidewalk, when a man in his 20s approached her.

Suddenly, the man poured bleach on her face, police say.

The woman, who police say suffered "loss of vision" following the assault, was transported to the hospital with what police say are life-threatening injuries. As of publication time, an update on the victim's condition was not available.

The suspect, who apparently fled the scene, remains at large, and police confirm that no arrests have been made in the case.

Update 12:46 p.m.: In an email sent to media, SFPD spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan writes that she was incorrect when she told news outlets that the victim had suffered life-threatening injuries. "She has non-life-threatening injuries. Sorry for the confusion," Gatpandan says.
