Truck Fire Involving Hundreds Of Pounds Of Melted Cheese Backs Up 680 In Fremont

A truck carrying hundreds of pounds of frozen cheese caught fire in the East Bay Monday morning, leading to the shutdown of the five right lanes of southbound 680, with only one southbound lane remaining open. CBS 5 reports on the situation, which began with the truck catching fire on the off-ramp to state Highway 262 at around 11:30 a.m.

The Fremont Fire Department tweeted out a picture of the blaze, which they said was extinguished as of 12:20 p.m., and from the looks of it the freeway was not clogged with melted cheese, despite CBS's headline.

The East Bay Times, which does not mention the cheese, reports that a couple of southbound lanes remained block as of 2 p.m., continuing to cause afternoon traffic through the area, as the fire remains under investigation.
