What happens if you fall and get injured on a Bay Area trail that's difficult to reach? If you're hiking in Contra Costa County, you might end up taking the ride of your life, just like this mountain biker did Saturday.
The call came at 12:53 p.m. Saturday: a mountain biker had fallen and hurt himself near North Peak Trail on Mount Diablo.
According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, assistance was requested to search for the victim from above, by using their STARR 3 helicopter. "Within minutes," they say, the biker was located "approximately six miles up North Peak Trail."
The helicopter landed nearby so a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Captain/Paramedic could take a look at the injured cyclist. After determining that the victim appeared to have a broken leg, the paramedic said that due to "the extended time it would take to transport the patient out on moderately steep and unstable fire trails," the victim should be lifted via helicopter and carried to the medical units waiting at a parking lot near Mitchell Canyon, which would then take him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
