A man in an apparently "agitated" state got out of his vehicle and climbed onto one of the center support structures of the Bay Bridge Wednesday morning, causing the closure of two westbound lanes of the western span and leading to a traffic backup. Chopper footage via CBS 5 shows the man, wearing a black baseball cap and gray sweatshirt, sitting atop the center anchorage on one side of the bridge, and he has reportedly been texting and talking on his cellphone. The incident began around 10:14 a.m. this morning, and CHP officers are on the scene.
The man's red truck is sitting on the bridge nearby.
ABC 7 shows more footage below of the traffic which has backed up to the Maze on the Oakland side. They report that the part of the bridge he's sitting on is about 20 to 25 feet above the roadway on the western span.
We'll update you as further information becomes available.
Update: The Chronicle reports that the man's truck broke down on the bridge, and he only climbed onto the side of the bridge after a tow truck arrived.
