A city already on edge following a high-profile police shooting on Market Street had more reason for concern Wednesday night, when a suspected explosive was reported in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood.

According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan, officers were summoned to the intersection of Market and Castro Streets at 9:17 p.m. Wednesday on reports of a "suspicious package."

"The reporting party stated a propane tank was found with a label indicating the item was possibly explosive in nature," Gatpandan says.

By 9:59 p.m., a shelter in place had been ordered for the area of Market and Castro, 18th and Castro, and Diamond and Castro, a message sent by the Alert SF system read. Gatpandan says that the area was also closed to vehicle, pedestrian, and Muni traffic.

SFPD'S Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit responded to the scene, Gatpandan says, a response you can see in the video above. That unit "ultimately rendered the item non-hazardous at approximately 11:10 p.m.," Gatpandan says, and the area was reopened by 12:02 a.m.
