A man who hopped into a woman's car and demanded a ride is in police custody this morning, after the vehicle's rightful owner bailed and the miscreant took off.

Two women — a 40-year-old and a 47-year-old — were in a car stopped at a red light at 23rd Street and Potrero Avenue at 1:16 p.m. Monday when the carjacking occurred.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the 52-year-old suspect "jumped in the backseat" of the car and "ordered" the 41-year-old woman "to drive."

Instead, the women "jumped out of the vehicle," police say. The suspect "jumped into the driver's seat and drove off."

But his road trip was short-lived, according to the SFPD. Instead, the man was pulled over at Sixth and Brannan Streets, they say, where he was taken into custody.

The victims were uninjured in the carjacking, police say. As of publication time, the SFPD did not provide the suspect's identity or offer any further details on the crime.
