53-year-old Jerome Dion Dawkins, who was convicted last October on multiple counts of lewd behavior and stalking on BART, including false imprisonment, indecent exposure, and lewd acts on children, was sentenced last week to 25 years in prison with three years' credit for time served. As Bay City News reports, Dawkins was already a convicted sex offender and was a transient, and he went on a public masturbating spree in April and May of 2015, which included some threatening and aggressive behavior toward women.

During his 10-day trial in San Mateo County Superior Court last fall, Dawkins was accused in three separate incidents. In the first incident on a BART train in Daly City on April 22, 2015, Dawkins was said to have trapped a 24-year-old woman in a BART seat and masturbated in front of her. Following that, on May 5, Dawkins was publicly masturbating and apparently called out to an underage girl to watch him on BART at SFO. As the Mercury News reports, the victim began to cry, and he stalked her between multiple seats, telling her to stop crying and he was going to "mess with her" and make her pregnant.

He would then get arrested the following day, May 6, 2015, after a 24-year-old woman called police after Dawkins exposed himself to her on another BART train. When police arrived and arrested him, they were able to connect him to the previous two incidents, according to prosecutors.

CBS 5 previously reported that Dawkins's defense attorney tried to get a mistrial declared after jurors were mistakenly shown documentation of Dawkins's prior convictions in their juror packets, but the judge spoke to jurors, all of whom said they either had not noticed it or it did not figure into their deliberations.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe had been pushing for a life sentence for Dawkins, because of his prior convictions, but he tells the Merc, "25 years in prison is not exactly a light sentence either." Dawkins is expected to serve at least half of that time behind bars.

Not all BART masturbators get such treatment, at least for first offenses — one man, apparently caught for a first offense last month, was merely banned from the BART system for 30 days.
