The curtain's come down at Show Dogs and next-door sibling business Machine Coffee: A call to the restaurant confirms that their last day of operation was the 23rd and that a remodel is underway as they prepare to either move elsewhere or close entirely.

Show Dogs, which opened at 1020 Market Street near the Warfield and the Golden Gate Theatre in 2009, was a side project of John Clark and Gayle Pirie, the chefs most famous for the 1999-founded Foreign Cinema, still a fine dining mainstay in the Mission. With an in-house charcutier, Show Dogs was known for its elevated hot dogs and sausages paired with a selection of craft beers, and was also popular for its fried chicken sandwich. It expanded with next door Machine Coffee and Deli in 2012 according to an Inside Scoop piece written at the time.

Hoodline had the first word on the closures, having spotted a note on the door of the business bidding farewell to the location. Another letter on the building informs us the space is for sale. SFist has reached out to Foreign Cinema and is awaiting comment.

Update: John Clark added in a statement to SFist that he's "really sad to leave the neighborhood," and unfortunately feels he's leaving the area worse than when he found it. "The neighborhood isn't better than it used to be," he says, indicating that it's in fact gotten worse, and in the end he cites "the amount of business we were able to do with our concept" as the reason for the closure.

"For us, we got really good reviews, often enough, and we made it to a couple of national magazine publication things, and we had a good run. We felt good about the food program. But for a long time, the theatre wasn't as busy as it used to be, and as it should have been, and that was a big bummer to us." The Warfield "seemed to be a little under-serviced with events and didn't bring us as many clients as we hoped," says Clark, and "only this year has the Golden Gate Theatre been busy.

Meanwhile, new businesses on the next block down have appeared of late, with Popsons Burger and next door wine bar Waystone likely to fulfill your pre- or post-show needs. (And no doubt Popsons has taken some business away from Show Dogs, which also boasted a great burger.)

For those who are taking this particular loss hard, all is not lost. It's possible Machine could have a second act on Valencia or that Show Dogs or a similar concept could also reappear in the Mission, says Clark. "We felt really good about our sausages and chicken sandwich, and we're just looking for a nice little nook to do those out of."
