A man who allegedly impersonated Elon Musk says a Tesla lawsuit against him should be dismissed because the impersonation was just too "goofy" to be taken seriously. The Chronicle reports that Todd Katz, a former CFO at the oil company Quest Integrity Group, is accused of sending an email — masquerading as if it was from Musk — to Tesla CFO Jason Wheeler in an apparent attempt to gain information about the company.

“Why you so cautious w Q3/4 guidance on call," Bloomberg reports the email read. "What is ur best guess as to where we actually come in on q3/4 deliverables. Honest best guess. no bs.”

The email was sent from [email protected] and was signed "em" — Musk's initials. It was not sent by Musk, however, and Tesla says that it was in fact Katz who wrote it. Katz, for his part, appears to have taken a "can't you take a joke?" approach to the entire thing.

“Nobody who received this preposterous and grammatically deficient e-mail ever believed that it really came from Elon Musk,” Bloomberg reports Katz as saying in a filing. “Despite the fact that Tesla had posted significant losses for sixteen straight quarters, it has elected to spend its investors’ funds to pursue this petty, ill-conceived lawsuit.”

Telsa filed the complaint against Katz on September 14, and reportedly claimed at the time that Katz's alleged email was part of an oil-industry effort to undermine the company. Katz resigned from Quest Integrity Group a few days later.

Katz also claims that Tesla worked to "publicly embarrass and silence him" by hacking his Twitter account — a claim that Tesla denies. "The oil executive Todd Katz is perfectly capable of embarrassing himself with no help from Tesla," noted a spokesperson.
