Halloween is just around the corner, ready to jump out at you and scream "boo!" This week, along with the usual odd events and curious affairs are some notably spooky ones, such as the Armory's haunted house. Here are some of the most promising, culminating with the holiday some refer to as "Straight Pride."

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25

SECRET HISTORY OF TWIN PEAKS AT THE ROXIE: Haight Street bookseller the Booksmith, who was just in the news for its forthcoming expansion that will allow it more event space, is crashing the Roxie Theater to host a presentation from Mark Frost, the author of The Secret History of Twin Peaks. Frost, a novelist, screenwriter, and more, is the co-creator of the television series that will be resurrected by Showtime and David Lynch. TERROR TUESDAY AT THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE: Every Tuesday is "Terror Tuesday" at Alamo, but this one is the most terrifying of all as we creep and crawl toward the 31st. Candyman, the 1992 classic meta-horror/slasher picture directed by Bernard Rose and based on a Clive Barker story, is the film. The soundtrack is by Philip Glass! WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26

BI-RITE WINE TASTING: Across the street from their 18th Street outfit at food demo space 18 Reasons, Bi-Rite takes you on a tour of what's new on their shelves. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27

DAWN OF THE DEAD SCREENING: Zombie movie fans will want to stumble, arms outstretched, over to the Castro Theater for a screening of George Romero's second zombie flick, Dawn of the Dead, which was also the dawn of the modern zombie film. With apologies to Walking Dead fans, it's become a rather mindless genre these days (get it?) so go back to the start! Presented as a double Feature with 110 minutes of spooky weird trailers at 9:25 p.m. The Castro Theatre, 429 Castro Street, 7 p.m., $11

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28

TIGA AND TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS: The Midway and its dance floor — the largest single-level, single-room one in San Francisco, or so they say — will be in fine form this Friday. So, for that matter, will the Midway's outdoor patio space. Everything's going to be filled to the brim and styled after The Shining's Overlook Hotel: Playing are TIGA (live) and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (DJ set). This should be a big night! All work and no play, as they say, so get over there and dance. The Midway, 900 Marin Street, 9 p.m., $29.50 - $40

GHOST SHIP: Devised in response to the demise of the erstwhile Castro Halloween, Ghost Ship set sail in 2008. Rule #1 is that the art comes first, but music, fun, and weird costumes follow quickly. Ghost Ship, which is two nights, has become steadily larger over the years, and this time it's being held in a 3-story interactive mezzanine area built into Pier 70 for Super Bowl 50. Expect original installations both nights, DJ sets by DIRTYBIRD faves JUSTIN MARTIN and J.PHLIP on Friday, and acts including THE ORB, DJ DAN, and 20+ piece "indie techno circus" THE MUTAYTOR on Saturday. LIFESTYLES OF THE DEAD AND THE FAMOUS Want to see dead people? Look no further than Virgil's Sea Room, the El Rio adjacent bar and patio where Saturday night is a time to dress up as your favorite deceased person. Expect this to be outrageous and somewhat inflammatory and extremely fun. $100 prize for best dead celeb, people, so get working on those Bowie/Prince costumes (sorry I'm sorry). The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949 Cartoon)

DISNEY HALLOWEEN: One for the kids, and quite frankly me: A film screening of Disney's Halloween shorts at the Walt Disney Family Museum. Expect 90 minutes of animations from 1929 to 1952, including Disney's great take on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30

FIELDWORK BREWING PUMPKIN CARVING AND DOG COSTUME CONTEST: You had me at Fieldwork Brewing, the Berkeley spot churning out some of the freshest beers in the Bay. Over at their taproom they'll have a pumpkin carving contest set up with everything you need (including pumpkins) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., then a Halloween dog costume contest from 2 to 4 p.m. — there are several gift card prizes. ANDY WARHOL FILM WITH THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: In this film by Andy Warhol, every member of the Velvet Underground has their tarot cards read at a large apartment party. There's no music from the band but they eventually used it as background during performances. Anastasia James, associate curator at The Contemporary Jewish Museum, will open the screening. MONDAY, OCTOBER 31

OBLIGATORY ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW SCREENING: It's just a jump to the left and then a step to the right and you're at the Clay Theater. Sure, they play Rocky Horror all the time, but this time it's Halloween and you can probably expect costumes (especially if you wear one yourself!). The Clay Theatre, 2261 Fillmore Street, 10 p.m, $10

GIRAFFAGE AND XXYYYXX: San Francisco-based producer and beats dude Charlie Yin is Giraffage, and he and Los Angeles's XXYYXXX are kind of a big deal. The show's at Mezzanine and Brogan Bentley is also on the bill. This is where to get down on Monday, people. Mezzanine, 444 Jessie Street, 9 p.m.
