Police are telling drivers to avoid the Ocean View area entirely according to KTVU: There, at Capitol Avenue and Montana Street around 3:30 p.m., a suspect was shot and a California Highway Patrol Officer from San Mateo was injured.

SFFD Lt. Jonathan Baxter tells the Chronicle that the suspect shot by police was taken to General in critical condition and that the law enforcement officer suffered moderate injuries.

Fears relating to dangerous encounters between police and suspects are naturally heightened after an SFPD officer was shot earlier this month. While that officer, Kevin Downs, has been released from the hospital, the man who shot him, restrained via a flash bang grenade, later died in the hospital from injuries he sustained during a manhunt.

Update: In a press release sent at 8:06 p.m. Tuesday, SFPD spokesperson Sargent Mike Andraychak gave this account of the events:

On October 25, 2016 at approximately 3:30PM a unit from the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force (VTTF) followed a stolen vehicle (Honda) from San Mateo County into San Francisco. The VTTF Unit was comprised of officers from three law enforcement agencies within San Mateo County. Near the intersection of Montana and Faxon, the officers approached the Honda and an officer involved shooting (OIS) occurred. The driver of the suspect vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. One officer was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The San Francisco Police Department Homicide Detail and the San Francisco District Attorney's Office are conducting a criminal investigation into the OIS. Administrative investigations will be conducted by each of the agencies with an officer involved.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
