You may think it's the end of the world if you lose your cellphone or wallet on BART, but you may not realize that they actually have a functioning Lost and Found department and a nice lady who runs it. They even do stuff that sounds anachronistically generous and kind like write you a letter if they find your wallet with an ID in it telling you to come pick it up.
We learn all this and more from this week's BART podcast, which you can listen to via YouTube below, or see the full transcript here. Lost and Found clerk Stephanie Brown discusses a few of the notable items currently on hand, like a pinata and some rollerblades, and she shows off a bin containing just one month's worth of lost keys which weighs, she says, 30 to 40 pounds. And that happens every month, which means more people in the Bay Area need to invest those chains that attach keys to your pants or purses.
If you're missing a cellphone or a set of keys, you can go see if Stephanie has them at 12th Street Station in Oakland but the hours are a bit odd: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, noon to 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., but "Days and hours of operation are subject to change, however, due to daily staffing availability." (Sidebar: I lost a wallet once and had to go hunting for it there, and it was totally closed the first two times I tried. But it turned out that's not where I lost it anyway.)
