Amoeba Music's jazz section at their Berkeley location has a new focus: jazz cigarettes. The location has received its license to sell medical marijuana as a city-sanctioned dispensary, which it plans to place in the space where its jazz section currently resides.
FACT magazine spotted the news, revealed by employee Debby Goldsberry in a public post to Facebook. It's unclear when the dispensary component will be open to the pot card-carrying public.
"We were awarded the Berkeley dispensary permit tonight!! I am beyond excited. Marc Weinstein and Dave Prinz (the founders of Amoeba Music), Amber E. Senter, Mary Jane Patton, and I, plus everyone else on the Berkeley Compassionate Care Center team , are so thankful. We are planning the most epic dispensary ever at the Amoeba location on Telegraph. The dispensary will go where the jazz room is now. My mind is kind of blown right now!"
Other minds are sure to follow. The store applied for the dispensary permit last October, signaling their interest in a marijuana side-biz to complement record sales. "Amoeba has some really good friends who really grow some beautiful strains," store co-owner David Prinz, mentioned above, said upon submitting Amoeba's permit application.
Change has been afoot for Amoeba this month: Two weeks ago, our sister site LAist reported that Amoeba had sold its hallowed (since 2001) Hollywood location, which sits at a corner slated for redevelopment. Before the announcement, Amoeba LA grabbed the artists Earl Sweatshirt and Samiyam for a promo, called "what's in my bag," where they showed off their Amoeba purchases. Suffice it to say that "what's in my bag" installments from Berkeley are sure to be interesting from now on!
