I'm not sure that the Bay Area really needs another burger chain, but we're getting one! And it's one that Midwestern and Southern transplants are probably going to be excited about. Steak 'n Shake, a fast food outfit famous for steakburgers and milkshakes, headquartered in Indianapolis and founded in 1934, will be opening its first Northern California location very soon, in Daly City. The Business Times has the news, saying that the company is aiming for an October 15 opening at 362 East Market Street, and this is the third CA location after opening two in Southern California.

The chain is pretty big, with 500 locations primarily in the Midwest and South, but this is their first foray west, and there is also a location planned in Campbell — something that sparked protest from neighbors last year over concerns about traffic and noise.

Steak 'n Shake's arrival follows on the expansion of other burger chains that were previously foreign to the Bay, up until recent years, including Five Guys, Smashburger, Habit Burger, and Sonic, and earlier this year we also learned that Tampa-based Checkers and Rally's was eying the East Bay for an expansion of some 40 locations.

It's also interesting that despite being so ostensibly health conscious, the Bay Area is seeing big expansions of fast food in general, with Dairy Queen, Taco Bell, and Dunkin' Donuts, all opening new locations here.

And yet, we hardly need another chain when we have In-N-Out, and meanwhile In-N-Out refuses to expand east.
