Oakland has yet another dubious feather to add to its gentrifying cap. According to Condé Nast Traveler, the city across the Bay is still the second "unfriendliest" in the world — a title it's steadily held on this same list for several years running.

"Over the last four years, we've asked our readers to rate a city's 'friendliness' in the Readers’ Choice Awards survey, especially with respect to where you felt welcome," the luxury travel guide explains. "Did an outgoing local show you the way? Was the city easy to navigate?"

Based on the results of the 128,000 people surveyed, we can only assume that when it came to Oakland most respondents answered the above questions with a resounding "no."

Condé Nast didn't limit its survey to just the United States, and indeed, Oakland stands out as a particular stinker internationally as well. The city is deemed to be the 3rd unfriendliest overall around the world. The second unfriendliest globally? Why that would be Tijuana. The first? That honor goes to another American city: Newark, New Jersey.

Interestingly, however, we feel like this bottom ranking will be actually viewed as a plus by many in the East Bay. After all, Oakland rents have been growing so quickly that just last April Oakland's City Council approved a 90-day moratorium on rent hikes. Some blandly negative press might work to cool things down.

Not to mention, Oakland regularly gets the opposite kind of press in travel pieces that are trying to be edgy, including getting named the number five place to visit, in the world, by the New York Times in 2012.

And hey, maybe this survey will do something to dampen efforts to rebrand the city as "the wild side of San Francisco." But probably not.
