Following the deadly mass shooting in Orlando on Sunday, Supervisor Scott Wiener is convening safety meetings with the SFPD and members of the LGBT nightlife community to discuss security preparations for the upcoming Pride festivities the weekend of June 24, as NBC Bay Area reports. The annual celebration at Civic Center that follows the Sunday parade up Market Street draws as many as one million tourists and locals, and has been marred by late-day gun violence in recent years — though that has not been hate-crime related.

Immediately on Sunday, the SFPD issued a statement pledging increased police presence in the Castro and in other "places of high public concentration."

Wiener said in a statement, "No act of violence — even one as evil as what Orlando experienced on Sunday — will stop us from coming together to celebrate the LGBT community at Pride this year. More than ever, we need to show the strength and love of our community to the world.”

Tim Eicher, co-owner of several bars around the Castro including Q Bar and Beaux, tells NBC Bay Area, "With Pride right around the corner, we are doing everything possible to ensure that we keep our employees and customers safe. [But] It is important not only that we remain alert and vigilant to these threats, but also that we continue to celebrate our Pride, support our Community, and enjoy our rich and vibrant nightlife."

SF Pride issued their own statement, vowing to press on with plans for this year's Pride celebration.

President Obama was right in his statement: Orlando is an act of terror and hate. It is an especially heartbreaking day for those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. But this attack against the LGBT community — which has fought and won so many historic battles for civil rights — is an attack not only on our community, but on Democracy itself.

The most important think we can do now, as members of the LGBT community, as Americans, and as those that believe in freedom and the rule of law, is to continue to our plans for our 46th annual parade and celebration June 25 and 26 and let terrorists against our community, and Democracy, know that we will be unbowed and unbroken by this attack. We will continue on in the memory of those who gave their lives for freedom and civil rights.

It's unclear what new safety measures we may see at Pride this year. As announced earlier, there will be no Pink Saturday or Pink Party in the Castro the night prior to the parade.
