27-year-old Jesse Eckardt is appearing in court Tuesday to face multiple felony charges stemming from a nearly five-hour standoff with police Friday in Chinatown that resulted in multiple officers being injured. As the Examiner reports, he'll be arraigned today at 1:30 p.m. at the Hall of Justice. He's being held on $1.138 million bail.
The situation unfolded following a report of what sounds like a bungled home-invasion burglary, after a woman called 911 to report that a man had broken into her home on the 900 block of Pacific Avenue. An early report suggested he accessed the apartment via the roof. This happened around 9:20 a.m., and he then barricaded himself in a room there and refused to come out after officers arrived and ordered him out.
Following the sound of one gunshot, which apparently did not injure anyone, police evacuated the entire building, and Eckardt allegedly then remained barricaded in the apartment until 2:15 p.m., leaped from the ledge of the building and crashed through the skylight of a neighboring business and emerged onto the sidewalk where he was hit with a non-lethal beanbag round. He then retreated into a nail salon next door, and at that point things got crazier, as Eckhart allegedly began attacking customers there with shards of glass, and was "actively fighting by biting and spitting and with glass all over him," according to officer Grace Gatpandan, via the Ex.
He continued, allegedly, to do battle with police as they descended, and as KRON 4 reports, he caused "cuts, abrasions and blood on blood contact" with six different officers in the course of his arrest.
He's now been charged with three counts of assault on an officer, two counts of residential burglary, and one count of commercial burglary, as well as resisting arrest and other charges, as the Chronicle reports.
According to jail records, per KRON 4, Eckardt was booked Monday morning following a weekend in the hospital.
Officers all underwent blood testing and we do not yet know the nature of any conditions they could have been exposed to from Eckardt.
