Novato High School is closed today as police search for three suspects in a Wednesday evening student-involved shooting and stabbing that left one person seriously injured and another dead. The Chronicle reports that the first victim was found shortly after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday on a hiking trail near Fairway Drive, and that he was able to communicate with police but was rushed to the hospital. The second victim was found nearby, and pronounced dead at the scene.
According to KTVU, both victims are Novato High School students. One of the students was reportedly able to tell police that he had been shot and stabbed by three attackers. The suspects in the attack are described by the Marin County Sheriff's Department as three Hispanic males. The second student reportedly died from gunshot wounds.
At this time police are not releasing any details as to potential motives, although they are saying they believe there is no ongoing danger to the surrounding community. A shelter in place order had been issued last night, but it was lifted just after 9:00 p.m.
The school closure appears to be done in an abundance of caution as the suspects are still at large. βTo ensure the safety of students and staff, and due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation, we are closing Novato High School on Thursday,β wrote school administrators in a letter picked up by CBS 5.
Both the Novato Police Department and the Marin County Sheriff's Department are searching the area.
Update: According to the Marin County Sheriff's Department, two of the three suspects sought in connection to last night's murder of a Novato High School student have been arrested. The Chronicle reports that both the suspects are teenagers, and gives one of their ages as 17 years old. The first was reportedly arrested around 2:00 p.m. today, and the second arrested around 3:30 p.m. Novato Police and officers with the Marin County Sheriff's Department are still on the hunt for a third suspect.
No motive has been released as of this time.
