The latest offering of drag theater at Oasis goes above and beyond what you expect of a formula drag stage show. Above & Beyond The Valley Of The Ultra Showgirls is a full-fledged musical with a real live band, a show that begins with an actual overture, and enough impressive vocal talent to satisfy even the fussiest fan of musical theater. If you like musicals, it’s one of the best you’ll see all year — unless it would bother you that virtually every line of dialogue in Above And Beyond The Valley Of The Ultra Showgirls is a dick joke.

Tucked in to this barrage of double-entendres is an outstanding musical score (performed live by the band Enrique) that’s reminiscent of Andrew Lloyd Webber in his acid-rock phase. Above And Beyond The Valley Of The Ultra Showgirls stars D’Arcy Drollinger (Shit & Champagne) as Chablis, John Paul Gonzales as Chardonnay and Nancy French as Gewürztraminer (can you tell there’s a running joke about wine?). Ms. French in particular has a voice that fills the room phenomenally, Gonzales is capable of doing unbelievable visual gags with his eyeballs, and all of the drag characters appear to have more cleavage than most the biological women in the audience.

There are some impressive black light neon make-up drag effects, and several wigs and pairs of pumps that will take your breath away. A number of self-deprecating jokes about The Oasis venue itself add some additional nice comical value.

The story arc of Above And Beyond The Valley Of The Ultra Showgirls involves a rise-and-fall-and-rise-again story of a Jem and the Holograms-style three-piece girl band. This plot has a few holes so gaping that it’s a wonder that an anal sex joke wasn’t made about them. But you do not go a glam-rock drag musical at Oasis to see a complex plot structure, you go for the campy humor, outrageous wigs, and fabulous music. And on all three of those levels, Above And Beyond The Valley Of The Ultra Showgirls is a delightful pill to swallow.
