Last month we learned of a wrongful death lawsuit against the Napa Valley restaurant Redd, in Yountville, stemming from the August 2014 death of 61-year-old man — a death which his family said came from a bacterial infection he'd gotten from an undercooked scallop at Redd a year earlier. As Eater now reports, the parties have settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

As the story goes, former San Diego television sportscaster Larry Sacknoff had dined with two friends at Redd in July 2013 and all were sickened from a scallop dish. The other two people recovered, but a heart transplant had left Sacknoff with a compromised immune system, which led to his death from the Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection 13 months later.

The supplier of the seafood, Brooklyn-based Pierless Fish Corp., already settled out of court with the family last fall.

Per the Napa Valley Register, Redd has still admitted no wrongdoing, but says they settled in order to avoid "the cost of defending the lawsuit."

Just a little cautionary tale, especially for the pregnant or elderly, that those small-print warnings about undercooked shellfish and eggs are no joke.
